Lincoln library offers Medicare information session

Lincoln County Public Library will offer Medicare Made Clear 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the library. It will be an interactive, educational seminar by Richard Monarchy, covering the basics of Medicare, including Parts A, B, C and D, who is eligible, coverage options, enrollment times and what to do next. Luminosity event benefits health care foundation

The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation’s Luminosity gala will be held Aug. 10 at the Showroom, 2405 Lebanon Road. Its purpose is to raise money to support the advancement of health care services. The theme is “End of Summer Beach Party,” and the evening will include dining, dancing and the opportunity to bid on some great donated items.

Tens of thousands of dollars will be raised at the event, according to a release from the foundation. It has spent nearly $2.3 million since 2016, purchasing a sophisticated system to use in surgery, a robot using ultraviolet light to kill germs in rooms and a neo-natol CPAP for newborns to assist them in breathing, for example. Money raised also supports a children’s camp for special needs children.

Milburn family reunion planned

The family of William H. and Sudie Kimberlin Milburn will have its annual family reunion on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Idle Hour Park, on Old Willisburg Road in Springfield. McDowell Wellness Center offering after school program for children

McDowell Wellness Center is offering an After School Gym and Swim program for children ages 6 through 13. The program begins Aug. 14 and continues through May 21, 2020. Children can choose to participate in McDowell Minnows, Jr. Boot Camp, or both. 

McDowell Minnows is a non-competitive program designed for children who have completed swimming lessons, but are not quite ready for a competitive team. This program will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

Jr. Boot Camp is an energetic, exercise program designed to encourage kids to “Get Moving”. This program will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

The McDowell Minnows monthly fee is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. The Jr. Boot Camp monthly fee is $40 for members and $55 for non-members. The monthly fee for both programs is $75 for members and $90 for non-members. Additional children in the same family will receive a $5 discount each month.

There is also the option to pay an additional $4 fee so that your child can stay until 6 p.m.  During this time, children will receive a light snack and can work on homework.

Kiwanis Club postpones music festival

Kiwanis Club of Danville has postponed its Musicians for Kids music festival, originally scheduled for Aug. 24, until spring of 2020. A new date for the event will be announced at a later time. Robert Cunningham, president, said the committee felt it needed additional time to make the festival the best it can be.

The purpose of the festival is to raise funds to provide Kiwanis Comfort Bags to children who have been removed from their homes and are in the care of the Department for Community Based Services for Protection and Permanency and CASA of the Bluegrass.

Cunningham said postponing the event will ensure they can “host a well-promoted, well-attended and financially successful music festival.
