Fire destroys Boyle home

Windcrest, home of Bob and Kathy Allen, owners of Bob Allen Motormall, was destroyed by fire Sunday night.

According to Boyle County Assistant Chief Tony Broyles, firefighters were called to 8370 Perryville Road at 9:15 p.m. for a fire in an attached garage. When they arrived, the flames had consumed the garage and quickly spread to the large two-story home.

Broyles said he was told that the cause of the fire may have been from a Mercedes parked in the garage which then spread to another vehicle, and then subsequently to the structure.

Boyle County had two fire engines and five tanker trucks answer the call. Mercer County Fire Department also sent two tanker trucks to help supply water, Broyles said.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the county, tanker trucks were filled from a hydrant in Perryville, he said.

“It has a good, easy way out and is a good hydrant.”

The tankers made at least 20 trips to supply enough water to put out the flames. It took two minutes for each tanker to leave the fire and travel to pick up water at the fill point, located behind the former Betty’s Consignment Shop at the corner of U.S. 68 and West Second Street, Broyles said. It took about five minutes to fill each tanker with 1,800 gallons of water.

Monday morning, Boyle County Emergency Management Director Mike Wilder said the Allens weren’t available for comment but, “they want to express their thanks, appreciation and gratitude to the fire department and everybody else who helped and offered assistance.”

There were no injuries and the fire is under investigation.
