16th annual ‘History Underfoot’ event Saturday in Harrodsburg

James Harrod Trust is hosting the 16th annual “History Underfoot” Cemetery Tour on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Spring Hill Cemetery. The tour will be 6-8 p.m. at the cemetery pavilion (back of the cemetery).

With Beaumont Inn celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the tour will focus on some of Harrodsburg and Mercer County’s ancestors with a connection to Beaumont Inn. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the history of the Inn and the community from:

Annie Bell Goddard, 1862-1943, educator, innkeeper, extension agent

Glave Goddard, 1857-1933, stock farmer, salesman, innkeeper

May Pettibone Harden, 1865-1959, educator, artist

Hattie (Hat) Parker Crutcher, 1878-1950, cook for Beaumont College and Beaumont Inn -Pauline Goddard Dedman, 1886-1965, storyteller and queen of the innkeepers

The historic characters will actually be James Harrod Trust members and friends, who will be dressed in period costumes. The interpreters will bring to life the color and history of some of the community’s forefathers.

“You can learn a lot on the Cemetery Tour and it is very entertaining. Our guests get to experience a little history and have some fun all at the same time,” said Jerry Sampson, JHT chairman. “Our past guests have really enjoyed the tour and we have a lot of repeat attendees.

“Our guests are usually fascinated with the history — and our interpreters just do a fantastic job. I promise that it is the best $5 you could spend for an evening’s entertainment,” added Sampson.

The $5 tickets will be for sale at the pavilion. Guests can join the tour at any time.
