Public libraries offer something for everyone, and today’s libraries are much more than warehouses of books. They are a hub of activity, providing free access to information and technology. On any given day, people from all walks of life spend time within the walls of the library utilizing services, attending programs, using computers, flipping through magazines, and yes, reading books. A wide array of programs are offered to help meet the needs of the library’s diverse community. From infants to seniors, the library seeks to reach all patrons regardless of their background.

One group the Boyle County Public Library is focusing on reaching this year in particular is the young adult population, ages 13-18. Teens are a unique audience with their own wants, needs and interests. Brittany Smith, the new Young Adult Services Librarian, tailors collections, outreach and programs to best suit them.

This month and next, Smith is introducing a number of new programs to teens, and collaborating with other librarians for certain teen/tween events. In addition to the very successful Teen Dungeons and Dragons club, which meets from 4-7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, the following programs are now a part of the teen programming line up:

• T.A.C.O. Tuesday is the Teen/Tween Advisory and Community Organization. Students (ages 9-18) are invited to attend this monthly group to help plan and prepare for library programs. The group helps to instill a sense of ownership in the library for younger patrons and can also be counted towards volunteer requirements. T.A.C.O. meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m.

• Teen Space is a monthly event where teens (ages 13-18) can come hang out with their friends in a safe space, playing Nintendo Switch and other games. The library also provides dinner for participants. The next Teen Space will be held on Monday, September 16 at 4:00 p.m.

• LibCrates is a new spin on the monthly book club. LibCrates is a subscription-style box that includes a free book and fun additional free goodies that relate to the title. The book selection for October is Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell. Teens can pick up their free box starting October 1st. LibCrates will meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. beginning in October.

• Teen Ukulele is a free music class that Smith would love to see offered in the very near future. “We are hopeful to create a recurring series of group ukulele classes for teens,” says Smith. “The benefits of learning to play music go beyond simply being able to play an instrument. It requires listening to those around you as well as engaging multiple parts of your body and mind. Participating in Teen Ukulele will help teens build a sense of community while also learning a creative way to express themselves.” Anyone who is interested in participating should send an email to bsmith@boylepublib.org or call the library directly.

• Homework Help is another new offering at the library. Students in grades K-12 are welcome to come to the library to work on their homework in a safe, productive space with snacks also provided. The library will supply books, online resources, technology, and assistance when needed. Homework Help is offered every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. when school is in session.

Teens wanting to get text reminders for upcoming activities can text @teensbcpl to 81010. Monthly teen calendars are also available at the library.
