Keeping up with the Colonels is your one-stop spot to catch up with any of the Centre Athletics action you may have missed from the past week and look ahead to the next week. This week we look back on another undefeated week for field hockey and women’s soccer, as well as a historic weekend for women’s cross country.

CROSS COUNTRY

 The Centre cross country teams traveled to Memphis to compete in the Rhodes Invitational against a field from all divisions. On the men’s side, the Colonels finished ninth out of 21 teams in the field, but fourth among Division III schools in the race. Freshman Austin Stallings led the way with a personal best 8k time of 25:30.9, good for a spot on Centre’s top 30 8k times ever, and the fastest time ever posted by a Centre rookie in a cross country 8k. The women’s team finished fifth overall, but had the best finish among non-Division I teams in the race, including the first ever victory for Centre over Emory, who was ranked first in the South/Southeast Region at the time. Alison Anderson and Hallie Searcy both ran personal best 6k times, also top 30 in program history.

 FIELD HOCKEY (8-0, 1-0 SAA)

 After a week to remember in Wisconsin, the road trip for Centre field hockey continued onto Virginia for a pair of games. On Saturday, the Colonels traveled to Roanoke and knocked off the Maroons 3-2 in extra time thanks to Ellie Dunham’s game winner in overtime, which was also her first career goal. Sunday’s game against Bridgewater was easier on the nerves as the Colonels jumped out early and never looked back, winning 5-1 over the Eagles. The Colonels swept the SAA Player of the Week honors this week, as Sarah Biggs earned Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and an assist over the two games, while Kristen Mulcahy won her second straight Defensive Player of the Week after seven saves in two games, including clutch stops in the overtime win at Roanoke.

 FOOTBALL (2-1, 0-1 SAA)

 Centre football traveled to Texas for their SAA opener against the Austin Kangaroos. Austin stormed out of the gate with 13 first quarter points. Centre responded with ten of their own after a career-long 42-yard field goal from Tanner South and a nine-yard touchdown gallop from Patric Edwards. After a scoreless third quarter, Austin capped off a long drive with a touchdown. The Colonels answered back with another South field goal and got the ball near midfield with just over three minutes left. Centre got to the Austin 1 thanks largely to the running of Edwards but could not get the final yard as the fourth down pass attempt fell incomplete and Austin pulled off the 20-13 upset. Edwards ran for a career high 198 yards in the loss.

 MEN’S GOLF

 The Centre men’s golf team returned to action over the weekend with the Rhodes Invitational at Tunica National G.C., where they finished 18th overall After struggling in the opening round, Centre shot combined team scores of 306 in each of the next two rounds, led by tournament low scores of 69 from Nick Stuedli in Round 2 and Harrison Williams in Round 3.

 WOMEN’S GOLF

 Centre women’s golf finally got its season underway as they competed in the Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic in Danville, Ind. The Colonels shot scores of 327 and 328 and finished in fifth place overall as Rylee Suttor led four Centre players in the individual top 20.

 MEN’S SOCCER (6-2-1)

 The Centre men’s soccer team only played one game in the last seven days as they shut out a good DePauw team by a score of 2-0, the second consecutive shutout for the Colonels. Alexander Garuba had both scoring tallies for the Colonels in the victory, while Tate Johnson racked up five saves. Johnson earned SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors after Saturday’s shutout against DePauw as well as last Wednesday’s clean sheet at Transylvania.

 WOMEN’S SOCCER (10-0)

 Centre women’s soccer went 2-0 over the past week. On Saturday under the lights at Amend Field, the Colonels shut out the Huntingdon Hawks by a score of 3-0. Alana Hughes opened the scoring with an early goal and Brooke Smithson and Kristin Dean tacked on second half scores for the Colonels. On Tuesday, Centre faced the Franklin Grizzlies and cruised to a 5-1 win. Dean scored two more goals, while Hughes assisted on four of the five Centre scores to improve to 10-0 on the year.

 MEN’S TENNIS

 The Centre men’s tennis team headed to Berry to open up the fall portion of their 2019-20 season at the ITA Regionals. The doubles squad of Newcomb Maddux and Faraz Ghamgosar picked up an 8-4 victory over Belhaven, and Maddux reached the semifinals of Flight C in what was the best singles performance for the Colonels. Josh Joiner and Matthew Bulow also won their opening round singles matches.

 VOLLEYBALL (4-7, 1-2 SAA)

 Centre volleyball began their week at Rhodes, where the Colonels controlled the match from the start and knocked out the Lynx in straight sets. Alice Rodgerson and Meredith Phillips had respective game highs of 11 kills and 24 assists, while Aby Dallas contributed four blocks in the win. The victory over Rhodes was the third in a row for Centre, but the Colonels could not maintain the momentum as they capped off their week with 3-0 losses at Hendrix and at home against Hanover.
