100 YEARS AGO — 1919

C.B. Banks, of Logansport, Indiana, was probably fatally injured Saturday afternoon at the Burgin Fair when his airplane became unmanageable and fell 1,500 feet and landed in a tree. One of his arms was broken and he received severe injuries to his face and neck. Peter  Cooper, of Burgin, who paid him for a ride, escaped injury.

 

Thousands and thousands of blackbirds passed over this city early today going south. Does this mean cold weather is near at hand? Their leaving this city forever, we believe, would be welcome news to many residents.

 

A 100% attendance was recorded by the secretary of the Pushin Bros. Store Club last week when all the employees assembled for the first regular monthly meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting, a handsome portion of the store’s profits for September was equally divided among all the employees, as will be the monthly custom since the adoption of the profit-sharing plan.

 

At the regular meeting of officers of the Chamber of Commerce, a committee was appointed to go before the Boyle Fiscal Court and oppose the selection of the proposed Federal Highway route from Harrodsburg to Perryville and to recommend routing the road through Danville from Harrodsburg and then to Perryville, if the road is built. Many believe that if the road is built from Harrodsburg to Perryville, it would be a detriment to business in Danville because Harrodsburg would have an advantage.

 

75 YEARS AGO — 1944

 

About 700 unclaimed balances, representing sums deposited in Boyle County banks during the last 10 years, are posted on bulletin boards just inside the entrance of the Danville courthouse. Presumptive owners may file affidavits to be secured in the sheriff’s office at any time during October before the money reverts to the state. The largest “demand deposit” is in the amount of $900.

 

Members of the Danville Aviation Ground school class decided to form a Civil Air Patrol unit here. Beginning next Thursday, students will meet at the Goodall airport instead of at the Farmers National Bank to continue the study of aircraft and engines under the direction of Ray Daniel, licensed A&E mechanic at the airfield.

 

A middle-aged-plus man walked into the office of Ephraim McDowell Memorial Hospital Saturday morning and offered to pay a bill outstanding since 1933. He explained that his son had died at that time, when the family had no ready cash and was swamped with other medical expenses. Though statements ceased coming many years ago, he had been keeping track of the account indelibly imprinted in his mind.

 

A Boyle County man who was convicted in 1942 on a charge of chicken stealing, was among four ex-convicts for whom orders restoring civil rights, issued by Gov. Simeon Willis, were recorded in Frankfort. The Lancaster Pike man was sentenced in September, 1942 term of circuit court following his conviction of having stolen nine chickens on Jan. 24, 1942.

 

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

 

The Boyle County Farm Bureau, at the organization’s monthly meeting, went on record opposing annexation of farm lands into the Danville City limits, and adopted resolutions asking the State Farm Bureau to seek legislation against such actions.

 

The Danville Fire Department will destroy a two-story house, two barns and a garage on the new Whirlpool property on Lebanon Road. The fire will not only clear the land but will also serve as training for the firemen.

 

The Newcomers Club held a meeting at Western Kentucky Gas building with Mrs. Betty Wilson, representing KOSCOT Cosmetics, as guest speaker. Mrs. Wilson demonstrated her line of cosmetics and furnished fee facials to all those interested. Following a business session, a social hour was enjoyed.

 

Girl Scouting in Boyle County is taking on a new look, with efforts under way to include in the program girls from Kentucky School for the Deaf. 

 

25 YEARS AGO — 1994

 

Everyone from mom and pop stores to major employers will be able to obtain health care coverage through a new network formed by local hospitals, physicians and pharmacists. The Cooperative Care Network will provide a wide variety of health care services at relatively low prices to groups of two or more people, said Dennis Brooks, executive director of the new network.

 

The Danville-Boyle County Planning and Zoning Commission gave approval to Danville’s plans to open another section in Bellevue Cemetery.

 

Several Baughman Avenue residents have pushed for sidewalks ever since Danville City Commission announced plans to widen the street which runs from Gose Pike to Hustonville Road. In January, the city commission voted to pay for a sidewalk on the north side of Baughman on the condition property owners would dedicate the needed right of way. The sidewalk will run from the creek at the bottom of the hill to Hustonville Road.

 

More than 900 people watched as Randy Reinhardt, of Lexington, did loops and rolls, nosedives and vertical climbs in his small, black, one-seater plane at Saturday’s Oktoberfest at the Danville-Boyle County Airport. The event was sponsored by the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce and included a German dinner, airplane rides, music and a silent auction in addition to the air show.
