Two men were arrested on drug charges after they tried to break into a vehicle parked at Walmart early Monday morning.

Jason Cummins, of Mount Vernon, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief; theft by unlawful taking or disposition of parts from a vehicle valued less than $500; possession of drug paraphernalia; and second-degree possession of a controlled substance.

Dexter Herring, of Stanford, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief; theft by unlawful taking or disposition of parts from a vehicle valued less than $500; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At 5:07 a.m. as two police officers were conducting an investigation in the Walmart parking lot, they observed an older red Jeep Cherokee pull up next to a white truck and a male suspect get into the Jeep. Moments later, a suspect got out of the Jeep and walked a short distance to another vehicle and looked in the windows, according to police.

The suspect walked back to the Jeep and got inside, then the driver pulled over next to the vehicle that the subject had just looked into.

Two males got out of the Jeep and tried to open the doors. One of the men took out a hammer and smashed out the driver’s side window.

Officers quickly approached the Cummins and Herring and put them into custody.

During their investigation they also found controlled substances and drug paraphernalia with the suspects. They were arrested and taken to the Boyle County Detention Center. By Monday afternoon, Cummins and Herring were not listed as inmates.

Several officers with the DPD responded to the scene to assist.
