What you need to know to vote in Boyle County on Tuesday

Published 7:10 pm Friday, November 1, 2019

On Tuesday, Kentuckians will either re-elect Republican Governor Matt Bevin, or choose one of his opponents — Democrat Any Beshear or Libertarian John Hicks.

In this general election, six state offices will be on the ballot — governor/lt. governor; secretary of state; attorney general; state treasurer; auditor of public accounts; and commissioner of agriculture.

Also on the ballot in Boyle County will be on option for a write-in candidate to fill the unexpired term of county surveyor, said Boyle County Clerk Trille Bottom. However, since no certified write-in candidates filed to run, any write-in vote won’t be acknowledged, she said, then added that the seat has never been filled as long as she’s been county clerk and it would take legislative action to remove it from the ballot.

Bottom said she believes interest in this election is picking up, based on the increase in absentee voters at her office. “At the beginning there wasn’t much interest. But in the last two weeks, it (absentee voting) has really picked up.”

It’s possible that Boyle County may have a 30% voter turnout on Tuesday, she said.

“I wish it was a whole lot higher. It’s an important election and important races.”

Because it’s a general election and not a primary, voters can “pick and choose” a bipartisan ballot. “They can vote for the candidate of choice, regardless of party affiliation,” Bottom said. “You don’t have to vote your party.”

The clerk’s office will be closed for regular business on Election Day so people won’t be able to conduct vehicle registrations, and filing of deeds and other documents will be very limited, she said.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. E-poll books will be used throughout the county. And voters should bring their driver’s license, or some other type of photo identification.

If anyone experiences a problem or has a concern about voting, they can call the Boyle County Clerk’s office at (859) 238-1110 as early as 5 a.m. Tuesday, Bottom said.

“Everyone needs to get out and exercise their right to vote,” Bottom said.
