Our featured pets for this week are Callie and Gunner.

Callie is a pretty 1-year old tortoiseshell kitty. She has a lovely patchwork of orange splotches in her dark coat, including a cute stripe down her nose. Callie is a quiet and friendly girl. She is residing is one of the kitty condos along with several other cats and gets along fine sharing her space. Callie has had all her vetting done to prepare her for adoption and she is ready to make a wonderful companion if you decide to make her part of your family.

Gunner is a handsome 2-year old Husky mix that weighs about 45 pounds. He is light tan in color with a medium length coat and gorgeous big brown eyes. Gunner was found as a stray, but he is now neutered, up to date on shots, and been microchipped and ready for adoption. Gunner is very friendly, but also respects his handler’s space. He walks well on a leash and loves to romp in the exercise area. If you are looking for a medium-sized, attractive canine buddy, come and give Gunner a chance to win your heart.  

The cold weather season is upon us. The safest place for our pets is inside our homes with access to a warm bed away from drafts. Young animals and senior pets will be more sensitive to the cold, so brief exposure to the elements is best. Some smaller dog breeds or those with short hair may appreciate a sweater or coat to wear while outside. Access to fresh water is a must for all animals. 

For outside dogs, provide an insulated dog house with a thick bed of dry straw and place the house where it is protected from the winter winds. Check water bowls multiple times a day to make sure they are not frozen. In the coldest weather, even outside dogs should be brought into a safe, warmer area in the home or the garage. If you feed outside cats you can provide them with cat shelters. There is a lot of information online about to make feral cat shelters to help them stay safe during severe weather conditions. Some advance planning will keep your dogs and cats comfortable and healthy during the cold winter months.
