A statewide recanvass of the governor’s race didn’t change a single vote total for Andy Beshear or Matt Bevin on Thursday. All 120 counties re-tabulated their votes Thursday morning, and all 120 got the same results they did a week ago, according to results from the Secretary of State’s Office.

Gov. Matt Bevin, who had requested the recanvass after last Tuesday’s election, conceded to Governor-elect Andy Beshear Thursday afternoon, shortly before the results were finalized.

“This time, maybe more than most there is going to be some change,” Bevin said of the recanvass results. “… The actual number is going to fluctuate somewhat, but not so significantly that it’s going to change the outcome of this election.”

Bevin said there were some absentee ballots that weren’t tabulated properly according to the law, but accounting for that would not change the final outcome.

“It would change it by some thousands, but instead of being some thousands it would still be a thousand or some hundreds” of votes, he said.

“We’re going to have a change in the governorship based on the vote of the people,” Bevin continued. “And what I want is to see the absolute best for Kentucky. I’m not going to contest these numbers that have come in. It isn’t fair to throw that on our legislature to try to find something that there just isn’t. We know of some things but not enough to cause us to think there’s going to be meaningful change.”

Bevin said he wished Beshear well in his term as governor and his administration is already working with Beshear’s team to create a smooth transition.

The recanvass resulted in 709,890 votes for Beshear and 704,754 votes for Bevin — a difference of 5,136 votes, representing less than 0.4% of the votes cast. Libertarian John Hicks total was also unchanged at 28,433. A little known write-in candidate, Blackii Effing Whyte, gained one vote in Casey County, bringing his total from 45 to 46 votes.
