A quick glance at the calendar will confirm that this year is flying by. Time is a precious commodity, and families are often looking for ways to slow things down and connect. Finding affordable activities that work for a range of ages can be challenging, so the Boyle County Public Library is responding to requests to fill that need. There are many events at the library that are well suited for a variety of ages, making them perfect options for families to enjoy together. As an added bonus, all library-sponsored events are free to attend, making them budget friendly.

This week, the library is offering three events for youth and families, two of which are in celebration of the upcoming release of the highly anticipated “Frozen 2.”

On Sunday, Nov. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., the library will host a “Snow Sisters Party” in the Reading Room. All youth and families are invited to come meet and take pictures with the two royal snow sisters who will be dressed in their gowns from the new movie. Themed activities will also be available in the Storytime Room, where guests can enjoy Frozen-themed cookies and punch while making an Olaf craft with Ms. Libby.

Later in the week, on Friday, Nov. 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., the library will host a Family Movie Sing-Along of the beloved animated film about two royal sisters who, with the help of a talking snowman and a rugged mountain man, try to break the icy spell that keeps their kingdom trapped in winter. (2013; Rated PG; 102 minutes)

The movie will be shown in the Community Room. All who come are encouraged to sing along (and dance if you like) with the beloved songs as the lyrics will appear on screen to follow along as the movie plays.

The third family activity is called Master Builders. On Saturday, Nov. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m., youth and families are invited to build anything they can imagine using different building sets, including LEGO, K’NEX, Brain Flakes, Magna Tiles, Makedo cardboard construction and marble run tracks. Builders can work independently or collaboratively with family and friends. 

The library is also holding its third annual BCPL bookmark contest, where youth can design a bookmark based on their favorite book or character. Winners of each age category will have their bookmark design on display at the library, and the grand prize winner will ride along in the Bookmobile in the Danville Christmas Parade on Dec. 7. Bookmark forms are available in the Children’s Library and on the library’s website, and must be submitted by Monday, Dec. 2. The contest is for ages 18 and under.

In addition to these special events, while visiting the library, families are always encouraged to check out books, audiobooks, magazines or Launchpads; hang out in the children’s department; use the kids computers; complete this month’s scavenger hunt; play any of the numerous board games available in the children’s library; and — for those who don’t already have one — sign up for a library card. Librarians are always available to help with book recommendations and with finding resources for patrons. 

Spending time reading books and playing games together is a great way for families to connect with one another, explore interests and practice new skills. The library is full of free resources and activities that can stimulate the imagination, foster creativity and nurture life-long readers.
