Two juveniles in a stolen vehicle were not injured when they crashed into an earthen embankment at Jackson Park. They were taken into custody after leading Danville Police on a pursuit Monday morning.

An employee at the Boyle County Public Library reported that their Jeep Cherokee had been stolen from the parking lot at about 11:40 a.m., according to police. The vehicle’s license plate and description were given to local police to watch for.

School Resource Officer Ben Ray had just left the police station after finishing routine duties when he spotted the Jeep traveling on Sixth Street, said Assistant Chief Glenn Doan. When Ray tried to make a traffic stop, the driver fled the scene and was chased by police on High Street and Latimer Heights before striking a stone fence and knocking over a grill.

The driver then collided with an earth embankment when he tried to drive up it, Doan said. “But he didn’t make it.”

Both occupants, a 16-year-old male driver and a 15-year-old female passenger were not injured and were taken into custody without incident.

The male is charged with theft of property (vehicle) valued less than $10,000; first-degree fleeing and evading police; reckless driving; second-degree disorderly conduct; no driver’s license; and first-degree criminal mischief. He was taken to the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center.

The female was charged with receiving stolen property valued less than $10,000 and was released to her parent or guardian.

Doan said there was no evidence of forced entry to the Jeep and that the doors were unlocked and the keys had been left inside when the theft occurred.
