BOYLE COUNTY LIBRARY

News release

Make your next visit to the library a brief one, for a good cause, as part of Boyle County Public Library’s “Drop Your Drawers” campaign. “Drop Your Drawers @ the Library,” a cooperative effort with libraries all across the state, seeks to make sure that every child shows up to school and stays in school for the whole school day in clean underwear that fits.

Drop off packages of new underwear for boys and girls (preferably sizes 4-16) now through Dec. 31 at the Boyle County Public Library and at various locations throughout the community. Donations will help replenish Danville Independent and Boyle County elementary and intermediate schools’ supplies of emergency underpants and provide direct assistance to each school’s Family Resource Centers.

Underwear is a basic need and one that is easily forgotten. Local schools are handing out more than 100 pairs a month to children who need clean underwear due to accidents at school or issues at home. Because parents often are unable to bring fresh underwear to their children during school hours, children can miss valuable learning time in the classroom. “This is a need we have consistently,” says Anna Houston, Director of Family Resource at Danville Schools. “We like to have resources like this on hand.”

This is the third year for the library to participate in the “Drop Your Drawers” campaign. Last year, the library partnered with St. Asaph DAR for the campaign. A total of 797 pairs were donated and distributed to five schools, which more than surpassed the goal of 500. This year, the library’s goal is to receive 700 pairs. The underwear will be distributed evenly to the five public elementary and intermediate schools in Boyle County. The schools are: Hogsett Primary School, Junction City Elementary School, Perryville Elementary School, Toliver Intermediate School and Woodlawn Elementary School.

The “Drop Your Drawers” campaign is easily recognizable by the popular character of Captain Underpants by author and illustrator Dav Pilkey.

The library’s collection of Captain Underpants’ children’s books will be on display (and available to check out) during the Drop Your Drawers campaign. By all means, stay awhile and enjoy the library’s many services. (The visit doesn’t really need to be brief!)  For more information about the campaign, visit www.BoylePubLib.org.

Underwear may be dropped off at the Boyle County Public Library at 307 West Broadway and at each of the participating schools in the community.
