Letter: Sad to see Guthrie vote against impeachment

From Jim Porter, Danville —

Yesterday I watched the impeachment proceedings on TV where I saw our representative Brett Guthrie prostrate himself on the altar of the Trump cult. It was very sad to see the man embarrass himself in such an obsequious way. Like all other Republicans, he opined “Democrats have been planning to impeach Trump since the day he was elected.”

This may or may not be true, but let me remind Mr. Guthrie and all the Republicans who parroted this cult line that if Trump hadn’t committed an impeachable offense, he wouldn’t have been impeached.

He then stated, “After months of wasting House time on partisan investigations they (the Democrats) were unable to produce evidence of Trump committing a crime.” I realize that it’s been a while ago but has Guthrie already forgotten the three years of sham Benghazi hearings he and his Republican colleagues put on that resulted in no indictments and no convictions and, in fact, found no wrongdoing at all? Talk about a waste of time!

Look at all the indictments and convictions of Republican criminals that Democrats have gotten over the past few months!

And as far as committing a crime, Guthrie may not regard bribery and extortion as crimes, but I certainly do! But to me, the biggest crime is Trump’s total subservience and kowtowing to the ruler of the country that has 6,000 nuclear warheads aimed at us, namely Russia. As a former Army officer assigned to NATO, I would have thought Guthrie would have disapproved of disrespecting our European Allies and deserting the Kurdish people; but I guess I was giving Guthrie too much credit.

He then said that he “looked forward to getting back to business on behalf of Kentuckians,” implying that, because of the impeachment proceedings, no House business was getting done. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. The House has been passing legislation that would benefit all Kentuckians, but there is a problem: Nothing is getting passed in the Senate. Currently there are some 400 bills figuratively stacked up on Moscow Mitch McConnell’s desk. But nothing is getting past “the grim reaper!” That is nothing besides Reich wing Federalist Society judges. That appears to be the only thing McConnell cares about.

So Representative Guthrie spoke for only 30 seconds but he managed to pack three lies into that period. I’m sure Trump is proud of him!
