Clay Gilbert Russell

1930-2020

Clay Gilbert Russell, 89, of Hustonville, KY, went to his heavenly home on January 28, 2020 at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville, KY. Born October 17, 1930, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bessie (Hafley) Russell.

He was a proud Air Force Veteran of 21 years and served in the Korean War, getting high honors as Senior Master Sergeant. Once retiring from the Air Force, Gil excelled at the National Weather Service, where he worked for 20 years before retiring to Central Kentucky. He was recognized for his outstanding and devoted service as a lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club for 4 years. He was an ongoing elder at his church, Our Savior Lutheran Church for over 20 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and doted on his sons, grandkids, and great grandkids. One of his favorite past times was playing an ongoing game of checkers with a fellow military friend, John Zobrist. He prided himself on history knowledge of the United States. 

Gil was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Shelton Russell. He leaves behind his beautiful bride of 65 years, Margaret Evelyn Russell; sons: Doug Russell of Lexington, Dennis (Sandy) Russell of Newburgh, IN, and Barry Russell of Hustonville; 2 grandchildren, Sarah Russell of Owensboro; and Drew (Cassie) Russell Newburgh, IN; 4 great grandchildren: Evelyn, Amelia, Deacon, and Katherine; and 2 sisters, Mary Ann (Bobby) Reeves of Danville and Helen Vanoy of Junction City. 

Visitation is 5-8 pm, Friday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland as well as 9-9:45 am, Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Danville. Funeral Service will follow at 10 am, Saturday at the church by Pastor Justin Mason. Interment will be at Hustonville Cemetery. A guestbook is available at www.wlpruitt.com.
