Boyle County Sheriff’s Office’s new K-9, named Hero, experienced complications while in training in Florida and died on Saturday, according to Sheriff Derek Robbins.
“Although Hero never made it to his forever home in our community he was still a member of our office. Under these sad circumstances we are thankful for our great friends at Southern Coast K9 who are just as devastated as we are about Hero,” Robbins said.
Hero was set to complete his training and come to Danville in about two or three months. Captain Casey McCoy, who was going to be Hero’s handler, will be selecting a new K-9 partner in the near future, Robbins added.
McCoy’s previous K9 partner Niki died after suffering injuries in a wreck on the Danville bypass Dec. 31.
