The 2020 season premiere of the Boyle County Farmers Market opens Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Constitution Square Historic Site.

The look of the market will be a little different than previous years, with wider spacing between vendor booths, hand sanitizing stations and people wearing face masks and gloves. But the overall atmosphere of the open air market will be very familiar, and comforting to many who have been cooped up inside during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Market vendors will be using “the best practices” for responsible social distancing and sanitation as recommended by the Community Farm Alliance, said Boyle Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Jewel.

This early in the season there won’t be as many farmers selling produce as there will be in June, Jewell said. But there will be lots of meats, eggs and other foods at the market.

Vendors will also be offering hygiene and health items, Jewell said. Crafts won’t be allowed at the market yet because of the pandemic restrictions, he added.

There are 15 vendors signed up for the market during May, Jewell said, and many more are coming in June when lots of crops and flowers are in season.

Not only are people looking forward to shopping at a market where the farmers raise and prepare fresh food, Jewell said, “A lot of them are really excited to just get out and say ‘Hi’ to each other.”
