1952-2020

Sheila Kester Underwood, 68, of Stanford, KY passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2020. Born on June 15, 1952 in Aiken, SC to the late Robert Edward Kester and Dorothy Lou King Kester. She was a member of Stanford Baptist Church. Sheila graduated from Boonville High School of Boonville, IN in 1970.

She went on to receive her Bachelors Degree in Education from Campbellsville University in 1974 and her Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1976.

She was a primary school teacher in Lincoln County Schools for 30 years, she spent 21 of those years at Kings Mountain Elementary. She was a Chairman of Lincoln County Junior Miss and Distinguished Young Women. She received the Campbellsville University Teaching in Excellence Award.

In 2004, she was awarded, Volunteer of the Year by the Kentucky Junior Miss Program and in 2012, she was inducted in the Kentucky Junior Miss Hall of Fame. She was also given the Patriot Award from the Lincoln County Board of Education.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Stuart Underwood of Stanford, KY; two sister-in-law’s, Judy Underwood and Betty Melloan; one nephew, Jon Melloan (Christy); one niece, Amy Sandefur; grandnephews, Hanks Melloan and Justin Sandefur; and two grandnieces, Jordan Sandefur and Lillee Melloan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Edward Kester and Dorothy Lou King Kester.

Visitation has been scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Stanford Baptist Church from 5-8pm. Funeral will be Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11am at the church with Dr. Greg Hancock and Bro. Justin Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Perryville, Kentucky. Casket bearers will be: Marvin Marshbanks, Randy Attkisson, Mike Stratton, Don Bartley, Phillip Sebastian, Brett Curlis and Dr. George Munday.

Honorary bearers are: Dr. Rod Bates, Cindy Bates, Rhonda Marshbanks, Pam Cox, Judy Hester, Sherry Attkisson, Evonna Marcum. The Stanford Baptist Church Adult Choir, and the Lincoln County Distinguished Young Women Committee.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to Lincoln County Distinguished Young Women (C/O Mae Renner, 314 Dogwood Dr., Stanford, KY 40484).
