Barbara Hulette was recognized Saturday by the Danville-Boyle County African-American Historical Society for her preservation work with the society.

Hulette, former president of Boyle Landmark Trust, has worked with Michael Hughes and the society in preservation efforts in the black community since it was organized a few years ago.

“She inspired me to establish the African-American Historical Society ,” said Hughes.

He first met Hulette when he was struggling to help a group of students with a tour of the Willis Russell log house. She helped him with the presentation.

“I thought if this lady is interested in history, it needs to be shared.”

“She got the ball rolling and we felt she should have this honor from me and the historical society,” he said. “She is very deserving of the award.”

“The real reward is seeing the actual production become a reality,” said Hulette, a former school teacher.

“Teachers plant the seed and teachers love it when things go forward for children and adults.

“Danville is full of African American history,” she said.
