The Boyle County Rebels girls’ soccer team faced off against the South Laurel Cardinals on Tuesday night in their home opener and senior night.

Seniors Alyssa Montgomery, Hailey Cannon, and Lindsey Warriner were honored before the game for their contributions to the Rebels over the past four years.

Both the Rebels and the Cardinals started a bit slowly, with neither team being able to beat the other team’s keeper. But in the 27th minute, the Rebels finally broke the deadlock.

The goal was a thunderbolt off of the right boot of sophomore forward Peyton Bugg, giving the Rebels a much-needed advantage going into halftime.

The goal helped the Rebels get into a groove early, but no goals came out of the strong start to the second half.

The Rebel backline did a tremendous job holding off the Cardinals for a majority of the game, but the lead did not last too long.

In the 18th minute of the second half, the Cardinals broke through the backline, chipped Montgomery in goal, and leveled the game at 1-1.

The last 20 minutes of the game were hard-fought, but it wasn’t enough for either side to get a winning goal.

Coach Brian Deem was both proud and a little disappointed after the game.

“Our girls played their tails off. We are still very young and inexperienced. We left some goals on the field tonight, but I feel like those end up in the back of the net as we progress as a team.”
