Part of the mission of the Boyle County Public Library is to engage the community by promoting lifelong literacy and learning. In an effort to support this mission, the library offers college-level courses available for checkout.

Recently, the library added to its collection eight courses from The Great Courses catalog. The Great Courses are uniquely crafted for lifelong learners. The courses are intended to be engaging, immersive learning experiences presented by professors who are chosen for their ability to teach. As an added bonus, there are no exams, pre-requisites, or assignments to complete.

The Great Courses website states that the course creation process “involves so much more than just placing a camera in the back of a classroom. We surround the world’s greatest teachers with a team of experts who collaborate on crafting a customized and entertaining educational journey that’s both comprehensive and fascinating.”

There are almost 800 course offerings to choose from in The Great Courses collection. BCPL received a patron request for particular course titles, and after reviewing the available courses, the library decided to add to its collection the requested titles plus a few more. The current course titles available at the library include:

  • Understanding the Universe: An Introduction to Astronomy (DVD)
  • The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World’s Great Intellectual Traditions
  • The Spiritual Brain: Science and Religious Experience
  • Books that Matter: The City of God
  • Archaeology: An Introduction to the World’s Greatest Sites
  • Jesus and his Jewish Influences
  • The History of Christianity in the Reformation Era
  • Before 1776: Life in the American Colonies

Information about each of these courses can be found in the library’s online catalog at BoylePubLib.org. The library’s collection of courses is primarily available in CD-Book format. One course is available on DVD. Other formats may be available in the future.

Additional courses may also be added to the library’s collection if there is interest from the community. Patrons who would like to take a course not currently listed in the collection may submit a request to the library.

Topics from The Great Courses include: Economics & Finance; Fine Arts; History; Literature & Language; Mathematics; Music; Philosophy & Intellectual History; Professional; Religion; and Science.p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
