Charles Ray Scott

1923-2020

Charles Ray Scott, 96, of Lancaster, KY, passed away October 24th, 2020 at Baptist Health, Lexington, KY.

He was born December 13, 1923 in Garrard County, the son of the late Charles L. and Marie Ray Scott. A lifelong resident of Garrard County and a member of the Lancaster Methodist Church. 

Charles served in the US Navy during WW II. He was on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Having survived that invasion, he was sent to the Pacific and was in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was injured in the arm and pulled back but remained there to see the flag raised at Iwo Jima. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for bravery and his service to his country. 

He retired after many years as a salesman for MoorMan’s Feed Company and as a farmer, he enjoyed working with livestock. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty of 60 years, daughter Patricia Broaddus, great-granddaughter Emily Perkins and sister Mary Alice Shearer. Survivors include son-in-law Bill Broaddus, two granddaughters Stacy (Patrick) Perkins and Nicole Broaddus McGrew, great grandson, Harrison Perkins and two great-granddaughters, Madeline and Olivia McGrew, sister Frances Layton, sister-in-law Dora Clark, niece Alice Stambaugh and three nephews, Robert Shearer, Harold Layton and Timothy Layton. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, officiated by Rev. Daryl Hodge, at Spurlin Funeral Home, Lancaster. Visitation will begin at 10:00 with services at 2:00 with burial following in the Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Robert Shearer, Timothy Layton, Duval Sims, Homer Grimes, Mike Fathergill, Danny Jackson, Larry Bryant and Glenn Watkins. Honorary pallbearers are Eleanor Sims, Pamela Jackson, Cora Schmiers, Kelly Bray, Joan Robinson and Minerva Carpenter.
