Traffic stop leads to police chase; suspect found with drugs and cash

A Sunday evening traffic stop turned into a police chase.

Danville Police stopped a vehicle for traffic violations near the intersection of S. 2nd Street and Walnut Street around 7:50 p.m. Sunday evening. During the investigation, a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle was detected by by officers.

Officers asked the driver, identified as James A. Patton, 43, of Lexington, to exit the vehicle while they conduct a search for illegal narcotics. Patton refused to exit the vehicle, put the vehicle into gear and fled from police.

Officers began to pursue Patton southbound on 2nd Street and the pursuit ended on Dorothy Avenue at the Waveland intersection. During the pursuit, Patton threw a large box out of the window, which pursuing officers retrieved. The box contained marijuana and cocaine. Cash was also recovered from the suspect, and Patton was arrested without further incident and charged with the following:

1. Speeding 26mph Over Limit
2. Disregarding Traffic Control Device (red light)
3. Fleeing/Evading Police 1st Degree (motor vehicle)
4. Improper Passing
5. Disregarding Stop Sign
6. Failure to Use Turn Signal
7. Reckless Driving
8. Driving Under the Influence (DUI)-Aggravated Circumstances
9. Tampering with Physical Evidence
10. Possession of Marijuana
11. Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree (cocaine)
12. Trafficking Marijuana (under 8oz)
13. Trafficking Controlled Substance 1st Degree (cocaine)
14. False Statement/Misrepresent to Receive Benefits over $100

Patton was lodged in the Boyle County Jail.  Sergeant Brandon Record and Officer Keith Addison are the investigating officers.
