As we approach Christmas and the start of a new year while facing a global pandemic, it’s more important than ever to support local.

Because of COVID-19, businesses of all types have struggled in a variety of ways.

Some have had to shut their doors because of mandates from the governor. Others have had to alter their business model to serve their customers while keeping them and their employees safe.

Many people have been out of work this year or struggled financially, meaning they have less to spend on things like eating out or shopping for gifts. If you’re able, though, now is the time to make sure you support local business. In the process, you can keep your dollars in your own community and support a neighbor.

If you’re going to be shopping for gifts this year, consider checking out one of the many locally owned shops that offer everything from clothing and accessories to power tools, bow ties, pottery, or antiques.

If you’re not sure what someone on your list might like, consider buying them a gift card to a local store that they can use in the future.

The money goes to the local business now and your loved one can explore the shop whenever they feel ready.

If you are considering gift cards, don’t forget local restaurants. They have been hit perhaps harder than anyone during this difficult time.

Gift cards could also be purchased for other businesses like photographers, fitness centers, entertainment, etc. Be creative and don’t hesitate to ask any business if they offer some kind of gift card option. We’re sure any business would be happy to find a way to accommodate.

If none of that seems quite right, consider giving a donation to a local nonprofit in someone’s name. With all the challenges that come from a pandemic, many of these nonprofits are seeing a greater need than ever before.

And, shameless plug, if you want to keep up with all the local news, subscribe to the local newspaper. You can even purchase a gift subscription for the newsies on your list. We offer a variety of different subscription options. Call our office at 859-236-2551 to inquire about how to sign up or give The Advocate-Messenger as a gift this year.

It’s vital that during this unprecedented and difficult time we come together to support one another and be good neighbors. If we want Danville businesses to survive and thrive, we have to be willing to support local. There’s no better time to do it than now.
