The Mitchellsburg and Forkland convenience centers will change the days and hours of operation to help save the county money.

Boyle County Director of Solid Waste Management Angie Muncy told the fiscal court on Tuesday, “I have had to make serious changes,” at the convenience centers, because of “worker shortage” mostly due to retiring employees and cutting overtime.

However, “No one will lose service,” Muncy said.

Her proposal, which the court approved, was:
• Forkland Convenience Center — Will be open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for a total of 24 hours a week, compared to the previous 32 hours per week.
• Mitchellsburg Convenience Center — Will be open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a total of 30 hours per week, compared to the previous 40 hours per week.

Muncy said the reduction in hours of operation will “be a viable change, but will not have an impact” on the residents who use the centers. She said she was trying to make a schedule to keep from paying overtime and “making another hire.” But she also wanted the centers to be open at least eight hours a day, and not close for lunch or breaks, even if only an average of 19 people per day use the centers, “They need to get rid of their trash, too.”

Figures that Muncy compiled for all of the county’s convenience centers show that Mitchellsburg and Forkland centers were where the fewest residents disposed of their trash. From January through October of this year, Mitchellsburg had a total customer flow of 13,190, while Forkland’s customer flow was a total of 3,370. Other convenience center totals include Gose Pike, 66,904; Alum Springs, 34,269; and Perryville, 26,127.

Gose Pike, Alum Springs and Perryville convenience centers in the county will remain open as usual.
