Jason Cook, 37, of Frankfort, was taken into custody without resisting arrest and charged with first-degree assault and public intoxication after slashing Douglas Smith Jr.’s face with a pocketknife. Smith is 31 and from Frankfort.

The Danville Police Department had responded to an altercation Jan. 8 at 10 p.m. on Westridge Drive in Danville near Storage Rentals of America. The altercation had ended, and the involved parties, Cook and Smith, had been separated upon the arrival of police.

During the investigation, police determined Cook and Smith were doing concrete work at a job site in the area. Both men were intoxicated, and a verbal argument turned into a physical altercation, during which Cook produced a pocketknife and slashed Smith’s face, causing a significant laceration near the jawline.

The job site foreman was able to intervene, break up the altercation and secure the knife Cook used, which was turned over to police.  Smith was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and later University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Cook was taken into custody without incident and charged with assault first degree, and alcohol intoxication in public.

According to the Boyle County Detention Center website, Cook’s bond was set at $20,000.
