Citizen appreciates time, effort put into city budget discussion

Dear Editor,
On March 25 the Danville City Commission held one of a series of meetings on budget considerations for the upcoming fiscal year. This meeting, lasting five hours, featured reports from each of 10 city department heads, plus a presentation concerning possible changes in employee compensations.

I was impressed by the thorough, informative, and professional reports given by each department head led by City Manager Earl Coffey. The commissioners asked important and pertinent questions during each presentation and received valuable feedback from the staff members.

Five hours would seem to be a daunting amount of time for such a meeting, but the reports were filled with interesting charts and graphs as well as a video of the physical condition of one of our water towers taken by a drone. The presentations also included personal anecdotes and true concerns about being able to adequately serve the community. Each department also explained future directions and financial needs for implementing those plans.

Because of epidemic restrictions, the meetings are closed to the public but are being live-streamed and recorded by the city of Danville on YouTube. I urge citizens to look at the video of this meeting. All of us should be interested in how hard our city staff members work to assure responsible use of our tax money in providing us with services that are so important to our quality of life.
