This week we’re featuring Otis and Daisy, two dogs who came to the shelter as strays. No one has come forward to claim them so they are looking for a fresh start.

When a stray animal comes to the shelter we wish they could tell us their story. We’re sure 3-and-a-half-year-old Otis would have quite a story to tell, based upon the missing fur on his back and neck.

Our vet determined that Otis’s hair loss is due to a flea allergy that was left untreated. Otis has been an excellent patient, happily taking his antibiotics in a pill pocket and agreeably submitting to medicated baths. Good thing he likes baths: Otis’s new family will need to bathe him regularly and maintain a routine flea treatment to help him stay healthy and happy. This hunk of terrier love is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go to his new home.

Daisy is a young shepherd mix approximately 1-year old. When I spent time with her in the yard she couldn’t decide if she wanted to get petted or enjoy her chew – so she did both! She’d settle down to chew for a second and then grab the treat and run to me and lean in for a head scratch and rub behind the ears.

Daisy has an infrequent but hearty bark, which contradicts her friendly demeanor. I doubt she’d make a good watchdog but she will make a loving addition to any family! Daisy can be adopted right now and picked up after her vet appointment on Wednesday; she’ll be vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed before she goes to her new home.

Boyle County Animal Control is the government agency responsible for reuniting lost pets with their owners and enforcing laws pertaining to domestic animals in Boyle County. Contact them if you find a stray pet, lost your pet, suspect neglect or abuse, or have an encounter with an aggressive cat or dog. If you need to surrender an animal please call animal control to make an appointment.

Stray animals are held for a minimum of five (5) days before they can be transferred to Danville-Boyle County Humane Society for adoption or rescue placement.
