All summer long, the Boyle County Public Library offers fun, free events and activities for its patrons to participate in. On-going events include a Community Mural and a Historical Treasure Hunt. Weekly events include virtual and in-person storytimes, ukulele lessons, Yoga for Kids, and more. Here is a closer look at some of the library’s upcoming activities:

• Penguins: Aquatic Fliers

On Thursday, July 15 at 1 p.m., the Wave Foundation at Newport Aquarium will present “Penguins: Aquatic Fliers,” live via Zoom. During this presentation, participants will learn about these incredible animals, including their natural history, geography, diet, predators, and WAVE Foundation’s research and conservation initiatives. At the close of this experience, you will have a greater understanding and appreciation of these remarkable birds! Registration required. Limited spaces on Zoom available. • Axe Throwing for Teens

On Saturday, July 17 from 2 to 4 pm., teens are invited to try throwing axes in a custom-built trailer where they can compete against friends to see who can hit the bullseye. At this free event, instructors from Bluegrass Karting & Events will be present to guide participants in how to throw. Registration and a signed waiver are required to participate. Waivers may be picked up at the library or downloaded from the event listing on the library’s website. No open-toed shoes are permitted. This event will adhere to state and federal health guidelines, including but not limited to facial masks and social distancing. Tickets are based on 15-minute appointments and each appointment can accommodate six participants. This event is for ages 14-18, but all minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

• Teen D&D

On Saturday, July 10 from 2-4 p.m. teens are invited to play the greatest role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. At this in-person event, teens (ages 13-18) can venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. • Virtual Adult D&D

The library offers a virtual Dungeons & Dragons club for adults that meets on two Sundays each month. Adults (ages 18+) can join a virtual campaign on Sunday, July 11 at noon or 4:30 p.m. Sessions are run via several web-based services such as Roll20.net and Discordapp.com. • Crafts & More

Families are invited to pick up Crafts & More grab bags at the library. Each bag will have two themed crafts and a STEM project. The theme for July is forest animals. Kits are available for pickup beginning Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. This program kit is recommended for ages 3-8.

• Teen Take & Make: Folded Book Animals

This month teens are invited to upcycle old books to create book page animal art. Choose from a variety of animal templates to create your own masterpiece by folding the pages of the book according to a pattern. Kits will be available beginning Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m., while supplies last. This project is for ages 13-18. No registration is required.

• Animal Print Art

Use this craft kit to make a display piece with your furry friend. This kit contains canvas and nontoxic paint that can be used to make a fun animal print painting with your pet of choice. An instructional video will be released on the library’s YouTube channel. Kits will be available in the library lobby on Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m., while supplies last. While this kit is recommended for ages 18 and up, it is appropriate for all ages.

• Tween DIY

Tween DIY shows tweens (ages 9-13) how to make useful and fun items each month. In July, we’ll be making felt animal plushies. Pick up a free kit of supplies at the library beginning Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m., then follow along with the instructional video at home.

• Virtual Book Club for Adults

On Thursday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the library will be hosting its regular Book Club and discussion via Zoom. This month the club is reading Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter by Blaize Clement. Several copies of the book for this discussion are available from the library’s collection. The link to join the discussion can be found on the event listing on the library’s website. • Virtual Field Trip: Mammoth Cave Wildlife Center

In this virtual field trip, we will be doing a walkthrough of the Mammoth Cave Wildlife Museum, located in Cave City, Kentucky. Join us as we explore this 14,000 sq. ft. building filled with rare and exotic animals such as tigers, lions, bears, leopards, deer, sheep, ox, and much more. This video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel on Saturday, July 17 at 12:00 PM.

• Virtual Adult Trivia Night

On Saturday, July 17 at 7 p.m. the library will host a trivia night for adults. Hosted via Zoom, participants can enjoy friendly, social competition from the comfort of home at this interactive event. Trivia questions will be selected from a large variety of topics to give everyone a chance to feel like the smartest person in the room. There will be three timed rounds with short breaks in-between, if needed. Participants will be divided into teams upon arrival, but team requests can be made as well. Anyone interested in participating can join the event via the Zoom link in the event listing on the library’s website. This program is recommended for ages 18 and up.
