When people visit the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society, they sometimes note that we don’t have many adoptable animals. Actually, we have lots of adoptable animals! DBCHS has implemented several strategies to keep healthy dogs and cats out of the shelter, and many of our pets are in training or in foster homes. There are even more animals available on our direct placement adoption site, Home To Home™, and we’re featuring some of them this week.

Home To Home™ is a vital resource to families seeking to find loving homes for animals without surrendering them to a shelter. It’s free to use for both owners and adopters and gives animals needing a new home the best of both worlds: their current owner can find the best fit, and the adopter can learn about the pet’s personality and preferences first-hand. Even better, the pet doesn’t have to experience the stress of being in a shelter environment.

Owners post pictures and a pet profile to our site, DBCHS promotes the pets to our social media followers, and owners and potential adopters communicate directly. We’ve had great success with the program. In the first six months, we have helped place nearly 90 pets in new loving homes!

One of our users said the following about their experience: “Home To Home™ was great. Such a brilliant, innovative idea that makes perfect sense.

“Rehoming my father’s dog instead of taking him to the shelter was an answer to prayer, literally. It was hard enough losing my dad, and taking his dog to the shelter didn’t feel like something I could do, but I wasn’t finding a home for him on our own.

“I have already recommended this program to someone looking for a pet. I hope more shelters will begin using this model, which is in the best interest of all parties involved, especially the pet.”

Prevent a pet from coming to the shelter by adopting from DBCHS’s Home To Home™ network! If you’re interested in adding a puppy to your family, Chloe, the chocolate Labrador, and Shadow, a Great Pyrenees dog, are both young, fun pups looking for active homes. If an older dog is more your speed, then check out Shelly, a gorgeous 3-year-old terrier mix who loves tennis balls and belly rubs, or 5-year-old Gizmo, who’s laid-back and friendly with felines.

Speaking of felines, there are cats and kittens available, too, like Meow Meow, the pretty tuxedo who’s looking for a lap to snuggle in, and Blu, the stunning Blue Russian with intense eyes. Then there’s Anakin, Elsa, Noodle, and Cheese, some of the fluffy, wide-eyed, frisky kitties available for adoption. See all of our Home To Home™ animals at dbchs.home-home.org.
