Boyle golfers headed for state tournament

Four Boyle County golfers qualified for the state golf tournaments with top-10 performances in regional tournaments this week.

Maggie Cerqueira will play in the girls state tournament for the third consecutive year after tying for third place Monday in the girls 4th Region Tournament in Russell Springs.

Cerqueira, a junior, shot 82 at Lakewood, missing second place by one stroke.

She led Boyle to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Boyle shot 393, 28 strokes behind champion West Jessamine.

William Carr, Colten Wilson and Lawson Hon will return to the state tournament for the Boyle boys, who came within six strokes of a regional team championship Tuesday at Bardstown.

Carr led the three Boyle seniors, tied for third after shooting 74 at Maywood. Wilson tied for fifth place with a 75, and Hon was ninth at 76.

Boyle shot 303, beating six-time defending champion Taylor County by 11 strokes but finishing six shots behind champion Bethlehem.

The girls state tournament will be played Tuesday and Wednesday followed by the boys state tournament Oct. 8-9, both at Bowling Green Country Club.
