October programs and activities are in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library. These events provide numerous ways for patrons of all ages to get involved and experience all the library has to offer. This fall the library is hosting Dinosaur Discovery, an exhibit featuring over 120 fossils and castings from Dr. John Hankla’s curated collection. In addition to the exhibit, library patrons can also enjoy numerous activities including Chess in the Park, take-and-make kits, and an outdoor movie night. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming activities at the library:

Board Games Club for Adults

The library will pull out its collection of board games on Saturday, October 9 from 5:00-8:00 PM. Adults are invited to bring a friend and try out some new games or play old favorites. The library has games for all levels of players and staff eager to show you how to play. This after-hours event will be held in the Community Room at the library. Masks are required. (Ages 18+)

Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, October 10 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. Kid Science Club

On Tuesday, October 12 at 4:00 PM, kids are invited to come to the library for an in-person Science Club program. Children’s Librarian Libby McWhorter will demonstrate how to make Halloween slime at this hands-on STEM activity. This event will be held in the Library Park; rain cancels. Masks are encouraged. (Ages 5-8)

Poetry of Renewal Workshop

As our community enters into a celebration of creativity and writing with the Frank X Walker Literary Festival, the library will host a poetry workshop on Tuesday, October 12 at 6:30 PM. The workshop will be led by local poet Lisa Williams who has published three books of poetry, with numerous features in anthologies, magazines, and journals. As a successful writer, Director of the Creative Writing Program at Centre College, and New Poetry and Prose Series Editor at the University Press of Kentucky, she brings a wealth of experience to this workshop. Kits of basic writing supplies to use during the workshop will be available for pickup at the library, starting October 8.

This program will be held in-person on October 12 with the option to join by phone or online, via Zoom. The in-person event will be held in the Community Room. Masks are required. Teen 3D Printing Series

Learn about 3D printers, design 3D models, and watch them come to life in this 3-week series for teens. Participants will get a bird’s eye view of printing filament with a Flashforge Finder Lite and unique metal designs using the library’s brand new Ender-3 Pro. The series will be held in the Community Room on three consecutive Wednesdays beginning October 13 from 4:30-5:15 PM. Masks are required. (Ages 13-18)

Candy Catapults

Youth are invited to use STEM skills to build mini catapults and launch marshmallows, candy corn, and candy pumpkins. Kits containing all the supplies needed to do the activity at home will be available starting Friday, October 15 while supplies last. Join us in-person to make the catapult and launch candy that afternoon between 4:00-5:30. The in-person session will be held in the Library Park. Masks are encouraged. (Ages 9-18)

Teen D&D

On Saturday, October 16 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens are invited to play the greatest role-playing game from the Wizards of the Coast. At this in-person event, teens can venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Ghost Hunting: A Night in the Life

On Saturday, October 16 at 6:30 PM, local paranormal investigative team, 859 Paranormal Research, will give a presentation on what they do, how and why they do it, as well as a demonstration of their equipment and stories from past investigations in our area. This event will be held in the Community Room. Face masks required. (Ages 18+)
