Stephen Martin Howerton III, 72

Stephen Martin Howerton III, 72, of Stanford, KY passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Ephraim McDowell Hospital. He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Connie Hildabrand Howerton, his daughters, Joanna Howerton Stevens (Will) of Lancaster and Stephanie Howerton of Lexington; and his parents-in-law, Joe and Nancy Hildabrand of Russellville.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen Martin and Betty (Roberts) Howerton Jr. and his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Ted Carruthers.
Steve was born on June 10, 1949 in Shelby County, growing up in the Finchville community. He was a 1967 graduate of Shelby County High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture in 1971. During his time at UK, he was a dedicated member of FarmHouse. Steve was a lifelong Kentucky Wildcats fan, attending countless games with his friends and family.
Steve began his career on June 1, 1971 as the Lincoln County Extension Agent for 4-H. He served for over thirty-five years, working with hundreds of 4-H members and leaders. Steve received the Distinguished Service Award and served on the University of Kentucky Staff Senate.
Steve was very active in service to his community. He served several terms as president of the Rotary Club, was an active member of the Lincoln County Fair Board, and served as president of the Fort Harrod National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. For his lifetime of service, he received the Big Apple Award from the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.
Stanford Baptist Church was very important to Steve. His roles at church included playing in the handbell choir, and serving as a deacon, treasurer, and Sunday School Superintendent.
Services will be held at Stanford Baptist Church. Visitation will be Monday, November 1 form 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 2 at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Greg Hancock and Bro. Steve Webster officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Springs Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers are Dan Grigson, Roger Kirkpatrick, Tommy Kirkpatrick, Paul Long, Donnie Sutherland and Stuart Underwood.
Honorary Pallbearers include the deacons of Stanford Baptist Church, the Stanford Baptist Church Co-Ed III Sunday School class, the Stanford Baptist Church Handbell Choir, former 4-H members, leaders, and extension staff.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Stanford Baptist Church of the Lincoln County 4-H Program.
All individuals attending services will be required to wear masks.
