Danville fifth-grader wins state-wide beauty pageant

10-year-old Joslin Glasscock won Miss Pre-Teen at the Kentucky County Fair
Local 10-year-old Joslin Glasscock won Miss Pre-teen at the Kentucky County Fair beauty pageant Oct. 16.
The state-wide pageant was held at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville, and hosted 70 contestants representing counties all over Kentucky. It is the largest beauty pageant in the state, and it does not have a national contest.
Each contestant had to win a local county fair pageant to advance to state. Not every county in Kentucky has a county fair pageant, but some counties accept any contestant who’s a Kentucky resident.
Joslin originally competed in the Boyle County Fair, but received first runner-up. She then competed in Jessamine County and won that pageant.
Joslin is a fifth-grader at Woodlawn Elementary School and has lived in Danville all of her life. Her mother, Jessica Glasscock, started entering
Joslin in beauty pageants when she was a baby. She won Baby Miss Boyle County and has competed in many pageants since.
Glasscock grew up doing some beauty pageants and said that she learned and grew through them. She entered Joslin in pageants because Joslin has “always had a great personality,” she said.
“She’s a natural performer, but she’s also very compassionate,” said Glasscock. “I just think [pageants are] a really good way to marry those two qualities, because she’s able to use her enthusiasm and joy in life to connect with other people, and she really does want to help other people.”
The Miss Kentucky County Fair had three categories: casual wear, interview, and evening gown. Joslin believes her interview put her ahead of other contestants because the judges asked her more questions than other girls.
“I think I had a lot of personality in the interview,” Joslin said. “[The judges] really got to know me during the interview; they got to know about my platform and community service and just my everyday lifestyle. They actually kept me for a minute longer than my interview should’ve been.”
This year was Joslin’s first time competing in the Kentucky County Fair Pageant. Glasscock said they did not expect to win.
Joslin usually performs dance for the talent category in pageants. She’s taken dance lessons since age 4 and her favorite type of dance is lyrical.
“I really love pageants because it gives you a lot of confidence when you’re on stage; and you feel so good when people are cheering for you,” Joslin said. “I think that what you learn in pageants contributes to your everyday life.”
Joslin helps with several non-profits in and near Danville. She has a heart for foster care services because two of her three little brothers are from the foster care system.
She helps with The Village in Harrodsburg, a foster care clothing closet, and Haven Care Center, which helps expectant mothers and works to keep children out of foster care. Joslin recently collected items for Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, and donated “Christmas backpacks” to Sunrise
Children’s Services filled with fun activities for foster children to do before their parents get home from work.
Joslin plans to continue entering beauty pageants. She’s excited to keep using her platform to help others.
“I think if she continues on as she gets older, the sky’s the limit for the outreach she could do through [pageants],” Glasscock said.
