Library to host afternoon chess, crafting events, and book discussions

The Boyle County Public Library offers numerous free activities for patrons of all ages. The library is currently hosting Dinosaur Discovery, an exhibit featuring over 120 fossils and castings from Dr. John Hankla’s curated collection. In addition to the exhibit, library patrons can also enjoy interactive activities such as crafting projects, games, book clubs, and weekly storytimes. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Game On!
Teens are invited to play video games at the library on Fridays from 4:00-5:20 PM. Battle with friends in Super Smash Bros or race in Mario Kart 8. This event will be held on 5th Level of the library. Masks are required. (Ages 13-18)

Chess Mix
On Saturday, January 15 from 2:00-4:00 PM, visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a savory snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will be held in the Reading Room. Masks are required. (All ages)

KidStir
On Tuesday, January 18, children can make Snowman Snacks at home as they follow along with our instructional video. Kits will be available for pickup starting Tuesday morning (while supplies last.) Kits may also be reserved using our Curbside Pickup service. Call the Library at 859-238-7323 starting the day the kits are available to ask for a kit using curbside pickup and it will be set out in the rotunda for you. The video will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel. No registration required. (Ages 5-8)

Master Builders: Dinosaurs
On Tuesday, January 18 from 4:30-6:00 PM, use your master builder STEM skills to build your own versions of dinosaurs. Stations will include play-doh skeleton models, LEGO dinosaur sets, and “take apart” dinosaurs. This event will be held in the Conference Room. Masks are required. (All ages/Family)

Crafting for Keeps
At this program series, you will be guided through the process of making a craft that you get to keep. On Tuesday, January 18 at 6:00 PM we will be making Book Page Wreaths. This event will be held in the Conference Room. Masks are required. Extra supplies will be made into kits that will be available in the library lobby while supplies last. (Ages 18+)

Magic: The Gathering
On Thursday, January 20 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, the library will host Magic: The Gathering, a fun, fast-paced strategy card game from Wizards of the Coast. This event will be held in the Community Room at the library. Masks are required. (Ages 13+)

Teen D&D
On Saturday, January 22 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. At this in-person event, players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Youth Bookmark Contest
The library is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Newbery Medal, an annual award honoring children’s literature with a bookmark contest. Youth, ages 18 and under, are invited to design a bookmark based on a favorite Newbery Medal book or character on the official bookmark form, which can be picked up at the library or downloaded from the library’s website at BoylePubLib.org/newbery100. Completed bookmark entries must be submitted to the library by Saturday, January 22 before 5:00 PM. Library staff will vote on age group winners and an overall grand prize winner. Each age group winner and grand prize winner will have their bookmark design printed and available in the library.

BOOK CLUBS for Tweens, Teens, and Adults:
Third Thursday AM Book Club
In January the book club will be reading Looking for Me by Beth Boffman. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk, while supplies last. The book discussion will be held on Thursday, January 20 at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. Masks are required. (Ages 18+)

Teen LibCrates
In January, Teen LibCrates will be discussing two books: The Darkest Minds and Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken. The in-person discussion will be held on Tuesday, January 18 at 6:00 PM in the library’s multi-purpose room on the 5th level. Masks are required. (Ages 13-18)

Tween LibCrates
This month Tween LibCrates will be discussing two books: Twinchantment and the sequel Untwisted by Elise Allen, a fantasy duology series. Join us in the Conference Room for the in-person wrap-up discussion on Thursday, January 27 at 4:30 PM. Masks are required. (Ages 9-13)
