Boyle schools to launch art academy

Boyle County Schools will launch an arts academy for the 22-23 school year. The arts academy will offer drama, dance, instrumental and vocal music, art, technical theater and promotional media courses, intensive training and more.

“Boyle County Schools is well known for its academics, athletics and agriculture program, and now it’s time that we are also known for the arts,” said superintendent Mike LaFavers. “We’ve had a history of success in the arts, but we’ve never had our own facility to highlight the work of our talented students and staff. The addition of the Boyle County Performing Arts Center truly has set the stage for the arts academy.”

The arts academy will be available to rising 5th through 12th grade students at all five district schools through auditions. Instruction will be provided by certified, full-time faculty in art, drama, dance, vocal music and band.

Elementary students accepted into the academy will receive weekly classes in music, art, dance and drama, as well as expanded opportunities for field trips, arts workshops and afterschool programs, such as string orchestra and private lessons.

Middle and high school arts academy students will receive early scheduling and registration (supervised by a specific arts academy designated advisor), a wide variety of specialized courses in every art form and a choice of performing ensembles.

High school students, specifically, will perform two full theater productions each year, while completing a career pathway in the arts that will prepare them for auditions and college readiness, and pursuing the Kentucky Department of Education’s new Seal of Arts Excellence.

The district recently completed the construction of the Boyle County Performing Arts Center, a 500-seat, state-of-the-art facility that is equipped to host school and community-based performances, as well as attract first-class touring productions.

The performing arts center is adjacent to the new Boyle County Middle School on Cunningham Way and will serve as the home of arts academy productions.

Interested students may complete an application for the arts academy later this spring.
