Library to host movie nights, STEM, and crafting events

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities for patrons of all ages. The library is currently hosting Dinosaur Discovery, an exhibit featuring over 120 fossils and castings from Dr. John Hankla’s curated collection. Stop by to explore the free exhibit, which will remain on display through mid-March. Virtual tours and interactive school visits are also available. In addition to the exhibit, library patrons can also enjoy interactive activities such as crafting projects, games, and weekly storytimes. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

Game On!
Teens are invited to play video games at the library on Fridays from 4-5:20 p.m. Battle with friends in Super Smash Bros or race in Mario Kart 8. This event will be held on 5th Level of the library. Masks are required. (Ages 13-18)

Chess Mix
On Saturday, February 19 from 2-4 p.m., visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a savory snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will be held in the Reading Room. Masks are required. (All ages)

Teen D&D
On Saturday, February 19 from 2-4 p.m. teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. At this in-person event, players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Family Movie Night
Join us on Tuesday, February 22 from 5-7 p.m. to watch a newly released movie with your family! This 2021 magical movie musical is about an extraordinary family who lives in the mountains of Columbia. The family’s magic is in danger and the only one who can save them is the daughter who was not blessed with a gift. Rated PG. The film title can be found in the event listing on the library’s website. This event will be held in the Community Room. Masks are required. (All ages)

Teen LibCrates Wrap Up
Join us on Tuesday, February 22 at 6 p.m. for the wrap-up discussion of This is My Brain in Love by I.W. Gregorio. Stop by and share thoughts about the book. This event will be held in the multi-purpose room in the 5th Level. Masks are required. (Ages 13-18)

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting
The Friends of the Boyle County Public Library will host their annual members meeting on Thursday, February 24 from 2-4 p.m. Topics include election of officers, introduction of 2022 plans, programs, volunteer opportunities and more. All are welcome. Additional information can be found in the event listing on the library’s website. This event will be held in the Community Room. Masks are required.

Tween STEM: Dinosaurs in Lava
The volcano is erupting and trapping dinosaurs in lava! On Thursday, February 24 at 4:30 p.m., stop by the library to make your own volcano and then cause the chemical reaction to make it erupt. See how many plastic dinosaurs you can cover with your lava! Join us in-person at 4:30 p.m. in the Youth Program Room, or pick up a kit to take home. Available while supplies last. Masks are required at the in-person event. (Ages 9-13)

Crafters Who Care
On Thursdays from 6-8 p.m., join us in knitting and crocheting items for those in need. This knitting and crochet group welcomes current and new members to weekly crafting meetups at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will be held in the Reading Room. Masks are required. (Ages 13+)

Classic Movie Showing
On Saturday, February 26 at 2:30 p.m., join us for an afternoon showing of a classic 1980s Rom-Com, with an introduction from Stan Campbell. In this 1988 film, a woman’s life revolves around the New York bookshop where she works and the intellectuals she meets there. Her less-than-impressed grandmother decides to hire a good old-fashioned Jewish matchmaker to help her granddaughter’s love life along. Rated PG. The film title can be found in the event listing on the library’s website. This event will be held in the Community Room. Masks required. (Ages 18+)

Free Tax Prep
The Boyle County Public Library has once again partnered with the AARP Foundation and the United Way of the Bluegrass to host free tax preparation service. Now through mid-April, tax professionals will be set up in the library on Tuesdays and Saturdays to assist people with the tax filing process. This service is made possible through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. These tax preparation services are available by appointment only.

AARP tax assistance services will be available on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although anyone can make an appointment, the program is especially focused on low-to-moderate income taxpayers who are age 50 and older. To make an appointment call 859-374-1415 or email 500052568@aarpfoundation.org.

The United Way VITA Tax Preparation Assistance will be available by appointment only on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for people whose household income was less than $56,000 this past year. For more information and to schedule an appointment call 2-1-1 or go online to uwbg.org/CKEEP.
