Colonel Bernie Richard Hunstad, 70, of Danville went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 25, 2022. Born June 3, 1951, he was the son of the late Bernie LaVern Hunstad and Catherine Agnes Kelly Pumphrey. Bernie was a graduate of Danville High School and Eastern Kentucky University. He was a 30-year commissioned US Army Veteran and the recipient of many military awards, including the Legion of Merit award. Among his military accomplishments, he served as Inspector General and as Military Advisor to NATO. Upon returning home, he was elected mayor of the City of Danville. He considered himself blessed to have been raised in Boyle County and knows that it was this community that gave him the foundation and the tools he needed to move forward in life and continue to progress personally and professionally. Bernie was a faithful servant of God. His trust in the Lord gave him the strength required to face each day. Bernie is survived by his wife, Susan Burnley S. Hunstad; sons: Brian Christopher (Kelly) Hunstad of South Carolina, Chad Alan Hunstad of North Carolina, BJ Hunstad of Louisville, and Andrew Thomas Hunstad of Morgantown; daughters: Holly Ann (Caleb) Asbridge of Morgantown, Sarah Beth Hunstad of Alaska, and Kimberly Dawn Hunstad of Bowling Green; step-children: Anderson Salinas of New York and Madeline Salinas of Washington DC; brothers Tommy (Donna) Hunstad of Boyle County and Nels (Jayne) Hunstad of Garrard County; sister, Karen Martin of Dayton, OH; 18 grandchildren: Jo, Joel, Archer, Grant, Joshua, Emma, Isaac, Lydia, Rosalee, Lucy, Lily, James, Ava, William, McKinnon, Titus, Tristan, and Valentine; 1 great grandchild, Ellorie; and nieces and nephews, including Joe Hutchison, his business partner. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Dane; sister, Joann Edwards; and stepmother, Hilda Hunstad. Visitation is 5-8 pm, Tuesday at Centenary Methodist Church, 1441 Perryville Road, Danville, KY. Funeral Service is 11 am, Wednesday at the church with Rev. Chris Morgan and Pastor Dean Carpenter officiating. Burial is at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Pallbearers are Brian Hunstad, Chad Hunstad, BJ Hunstad, Andrew Hunstad, Tommy Hunstad, Nels Hunstad, and Joe Hutchison.
