Sister City Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland names students for Danville trip

Danville’s sister city Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland named seven students who will participate in the first high school exchange trip.

At the Danville City Commission meeting on Monday, Mayor Mike Perros read a proclamation for St. Patrick’s Day celebrating the first high school exchange trip with Carrickfergus. Saint Patrick was buried near Carrickfergus in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland.
The Danville students going on the trip are Chloe Strysick, Londyn Jackson, Lilli Hall, Kira Pusasteri, Max Germann, Ellie McMann, and Tristan Harris. Sister Cities Commissioners Jane Dewey and Milton Reigelman are also going on the trip.
Perros handed the city’s proclamation to wife of former mayor John Bowling, Mary Jo Bowling, who had proposed the sister cities idea 25 years ago. Mary convinced her husband to have committees on the matter, and Carrickfergus became Danville’s sister city in 2008.
Danville students will leave July 21. They will spend eight days with the Irish students’ families, then the Irish students will come to Danville. They will be welcomed by a “Great American Dessert Party” in August, which anyone who supports Sister Cities can attend.
