The Boyle County Public Library (BCPL) offers numerous free activities, special events, and services for the community all year long. Interactive activities often include storytimes, author visits, crafting, and book clubs. This month library staff have scaled back their regularly scheduled youth events to prepare for an activity-packed, all-ages summer reading program, which begins on June 1st. Here are some of the upcoming events for adults and teens at the library:

Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, May 8 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, May 10 at 5:30 PM, gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

Wrecked in a Good Way: Reading and Sound Performance with Heather Henson and Elizabeth Haigh

On Thursday, May 12 at 6:00 PM, enjoy a unique evening of reading and sound to celebrate the publication of Danville author Heather Henson’s latest young adult novel, Wrecked. We’ll hear the author read an excerpt along with an original soundscape created by artist Elizabeth Haigh. Heather and Elizabeth will then talk briefly about their writing and sound design processes and answer questions. Participants will then have the opportunity to create a soundscape of their own. Snacks will be provided. Copies of Wrecked will be available for purchase, courtesy of Plaid Elephant Books. This event will be held in the Community Room. This event was originally planned for April but was rescheduled to May. (Ages 13+)

Crafters Who Care

On Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 PM, join us in knitting and crocheting items for those in need. This knitting and crochet group welcomes current and new members to weekly crafting meetups at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will be held in the Reading Room. (Ages 13+)

In addition to programs, BCPL boasts an extensive on-site and online collection for patrons to borrow from. The online collection can be accessed at any time through the library’s website. Patrons only need to have an active library card to set up their online account. Digital library cards, which also provide access to the digital collection, are a great alternative for patrons who don’t already have a traditional library card and who are unable to visit the library in-person to sign up for one. Hoopla is one of the resources the library utilizes for its eMedia collections.

Hoopla is a digital media service where patrons can browse over 700,000 titles in six different formats—audiobooks, eBooks, comics, music, movies, and TV shows. Titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment later.

Hoopla items are always available, regardless of if someone else has checked an item out. Hoopla’s expanded collection of movies, TV series, and music makes it a wonderful free resource for entertainment. Borrowing on Hoopla is limited to five checkouts per month through BCPL.

Currently Hoopla Bonus Borrows are back for the month of May. Offered quarterly, Bonus Borrows provide additional titles that can be borrowed without counting toward the monthly borrowing limit. This quarter the bonus collections include: Finding Your Voice; Your Travel & Culture Companion; Discover a New Series; Suspenseful Tales; Learn a New Skill; Sci-Fi; Criminal Mysteries; and Just for Kids!

Hoopla can be accessed via the library’s website at BoylePubLib.org/emedia.

Information about library resources and all upcoming events can be found online at BoylePubLib.org. The library is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM; Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 AM – 8:00 PM; and Saturday from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  In addition, free WiFi is available in the library parking lot 24/7. Chat with library staff using the live chat service on the library’s website or by texting (859)-545-8398.
