Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, STEM and craft activities, storytimes, and interactive games are included in an extensive list of free events at the library. This coming week you can meet the commander of USS Constitution, learn all about fishing, or touch a sting ray. In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 10 days and logs their reading will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming Summer Reading events:

Family Yoga

On Fridays at 10:00 AM, join instructor Francine Southerland to learn yoga poses, breathing, and other exercises. Mats will be provided or you are welcome to bring your own. This event will be held in the Community Room (Ages 13 & under)

Henna Art for Teens

On Friday, July 8 from 3:00-5:00 PM, teens are invited to the library to learn how to create Henna designs inspired by artist Chinni Suryadevara. Follow step-by-step instructions to create your own temporary tattoo-like design using Henna materials. All attendees of this program are eligible to receive a Summer Prize Button to add to their lanyard collection. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 13-18)

Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library every Friday evening this summer. First, join our Pre-show Party from 8:00-9:00 PM to visit the library and play games inspired by the evening’s movie. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Food vendor options will be available for purchase during the Pre-show Party. The food vendor will vary each week. Possible options include Snowie Bus, Bee’z Street Eats, The Scoop, and Poppin J’s. (Inclement weather will move the film indoors. Any changes will be announced on the library’s social media pages.) On July 8, watch a 2010 ecological drama/documentary about our oceans, filmed throughout the globe.

Take a journey through our planet’s five oceans to discover never-before-seen worlds through the eyes of the creatures who live there. (All ages)

Old Ironsides

Join us on Saturday, July 9 at 2:00 PM for a virtual visit with Commander Billie J. Farrell, the first woman to take command of USS Constitution. CDR Farrell will discuss her experiences as a Kentuckian in the United States Navy and her historic appointment to command of USS Constitution, with a brief Q & A session to follow. All attendees of this program are eligible to receive a Summer Prize Button to add to their lanyard collection. This co-sponsored event will be held simultaneously in the Community Room at the Boyle County Public Library (Danville) and at the Mercer County Public Library (Harrodsburg).

Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, July 10 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email library@boylepublib.org. Storytime with Ms. Libby

Join Ms. Libby for storytime at the library. Each week Ms. Libby will read stories and have a sensory activity for those in attendance. Storytime will be held on Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. Weekly videos will have ASL interpretation and can be found on the Library’s YouTube channel. (Ages 1-5)

Makin’ Waves

Unleash your creative side to make a splash with these ocean-themed art projects. Each week we’ll dive into a new craft inspired by sandy days, ocean waves, sea creatures, and more. On Monday, July 11 at 4:30 PM we’ll be making Sand Play Doh. (Ages 13 & under)

KidStir

On Tuesday, July 12 at 2:00 PM, kids are invited to come to the library and make ocean themed treats at this fun cooking and tasting program. This event will be held in the Youth Program Room. (Ages 5-8)

Teen D&D

On Tuesdays from 2:00-4:00 PM, teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. At this event, players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play. Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, July 12 at 5:30 PM, gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

Master Builders

Build anything you can imagine at Master Builders on Wednesdays in July from 2:00-4:00 PM. Build with LEGOs, K’NEX, Brain Flakes, Magna Tiles, Makedo kits, & marble run tracks. All building materials will be provided for free play so you can try new things each week. (Ages 18 & under)

Rakadu Dance Theatre

As part of the Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, July 14 at 10:30 AM the library will bring the Rakadu Dance Theatre to the Jennie Rogers Community Center. Mecca Live Studio & Gallery, home to Rakadu Dance Theatre, presents a cultural dance program based on the people’s migration through India, Egypt, North Africa, Turkey and Spain. Colorful and uplifting, the audience will be treated to different dance styles that have their origins in these areas of the world. Rakadu Dance Theatre is best known for their rich musical diversity, highly explorative utilization of dance narrative, theater and seamless improvisation.

All attendees of this program are eligible to receive a Summer Prize Button to add to their lanyard collection.

The Bookmobile will also be there so attendees can check out library materials before and after the show. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages welcome)

Hook & Cook (Part 1)

On Thursday, July 14 from 5:30-8:00 PM, join the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Boyle

County Public Library for a two-part series to learn the basics of fishing and meat preparation. Part 1 will take place at the library on July 14, while Part 2 will take place the following week and offers a hands-on experience at the Millennium Park Lake, part of the Fishing in the Neighborhoods (FINS) program. A fishing license is required to legally fish at Millennium Park. Patrons who register for the program and attend the first session will be provided with the means of obtaining a one-day fishing license at no cost. Registration is required. Crafters Who Care

On Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 PM, join us in knitting and crocheting items for those in need. This knitting and crochet group welcomes current and new members to weekly crafting meetups at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will be held in the Reading Room. (Ages 13+)

Caricature Artist

On Friday, July 15 from 3:00-5:00 PM, stop by the library to have a caricature drawing created by artist Rob Maystead. All attendees of this program are eligible to receive a Summer Prize Button to add to their lanyard collection. This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)

Newport Aquarium: Sting Rays

Get up close and personal with Yellow Sting Rays as the Wave Foundation at Newport Aquarium brings their mobile Ray Cart to the library on Saturday, July 16 at 11:30 AM. Sting Rays are closely related to sharks, but have an incredibly different body shape and survival method. This program will cover these differences and similarities as well as how we can all work to be a part of their conservation. Those in attendance are eligible to receive a Summer Prize Button to add to their lanyard collection. This event will be held in the Community Room. (All ages)
