The Boyle County Board of Education recognized two district teachers who recently won state-wide awards at their meeting on August 18.

Ann Weise, teacher at Boyle County Alternative school, recently received the Roy L. Chapman Outstanding Teacher of State Agency Children Award from KECSAC (Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children).

Weise, who teaches special education and mathematics, was recognized for her exceptional service on behalf of state agency children in Kentucky.

The award letter acknowledges that Weise “exemplifies the kind of commitment and care KECSAC seeks to foster among educators and staff in the program that teaches some of Kentucky’s most vulnerable youth.”

Tina Henry, teacher at Boyle County High School, recently received the Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award.

Henry has spent 18 years teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities at Boyle County High School. She is one of 24 finalists for 2023 Kentucky Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Department of Education and Valvoline. The award will be presented Sept. 20.

Boyle Schools will be providing free student athletic season passes for athletic events for all Boyle County School students during the 2022–2023 school year.

The money for these passes comes mostly from donations, and some small budget allotments. The donations come from Empact, Todd Tiller with Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance and the Boyle County Board of Education.

The passes do not include bowl games and tournaments. Grades 2-12 will receive their passes in their student email. Pre-1st grade students do not need passes.

The board heard about an impressive enrollment increase at all schools in the district. From 2020 to 2022, enrollment at all schools increased from 2,560 to 2,793, an increase of more than 200 students in two years.

Superintendent Mike Lafavers said he believes this is the highest enrollment that the school district has ever had.

“This is a historic enrollment report,” Lafavers said. “I’ve never seen it, don’t think it’s ever happened.”

Enrollment for this year at each school is as follows:

• Perryville Elementary: 263

• Junction City Elementary: 371

• Woodlawn Elementary: 599

• Boyle Middle: 678

• Boyle High: 882

• Day Treatment: 10

Advanced Placement (AP) passing percentage is also up. Although the number of AP exams taken by students decreased over the last five years, the percent of students who passed exams increased from 67.07% to 78.1%. Lafavers said this percentage is higher than most other schools in the area.

In other business, the board:

• Passed the Pay Application Number Four for Olympic Construction, LLC for the New Boyle County Middle School Campus Walkway Project, in the amount of $2,529.

• Passed Pay Application Number One for Fieldturf USA Inc. for the Boyle County High School Turf Field Renovation Project in the amount of $436,794.

• Passed Pay Application Number Two for Fieldturf USA Inc. for the Boyle County High School Turf Field Renovation Project in the amount of $87,495.

• Passed Supplemental Form for Change Order Number One for Fieldturf USA Inc. for the Boyle County High School Turf Field Renovation Project, which reflects the Change Order increased amount of $80,299.

• Passed a motion to create one cook position; a 182-day, six-hour a day classified district position for the remainder of the 2022 – 2023 school tear. Food Services Director Katie Ellis said having another position will help with short-staffing issues. She said there are worker absences almost every day.

“I feel confident that there’s going to be a need; some days there’s a lot of need,” Ellis said.

• Passed an amended School Resource Officers Agreement for five officers for the 2022 – 2023 School Year, in the Amount of $145,000.
