This week’s featured pets are Etta Spay and Bella.

Etta Spay was humanely trapped by a community member to be fixed through DBCHS’s Community Cat Program. The Community Cat Program provides free spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and ear tips to healthy outdoor cats and kittens.

Typically, a community cat is returned to their outdoor home, which helps curb the population of free-roaming cats, boosts herd immunity, and maximizes shelter resources. Etta was an exception, though; judging by her emaciated frame, she was not thriving outside.

That meant we needed a different pathway for Etta, and we’re now looking for a family to welcome her into their home.

Etta is a pretty kitty with big golden eyes and a cute spot on her pink nose. We tipped her ear when she was in for surgery. It’s hip to be tipped and let everyone know you’ve been fixed!

Her foster mom says that Etta Spay loves all kinds of attention, including being brushed. She’s done well with the resident dogs and cats and is an all-around sweetheart. Etta had a great check-up at the vet: she’s regrown much of her hair, cleared a respiratory infection, and gained three whopping pounds in the last month! She was a polite patient and traveled like a pro.

Bella, the two-and-a-half-year-old black lab mix, continues flourishing in her foster home, where the family says she’s the sweetest thing!

According to her foster mom, “Bella’s doing fantastic. She’s putting weight on, and she looks great. We had a slumber party this weekend, and she’s all the kids’ favorite. We’re teaching her to “shake” for treats. I cannot believe this girl doesn’t have anyone interested yet; she’s so good.”

Bella and the resident dog Lula have established a relationship similar to human siblings: Lula carries toys by Bella to engage her. They’ve gotten good at sharing and like to play tug.

If that’s not enough, Bella makes your morning alarm obsolete. She is accustomed to her morning walk, and she’s always awake 5-10 minutes before to remind her foster pop it’s time to go!

A look back: In 1992, the board made major repairs to the dog kennels, replacing the cinderblock walls with poured concrete, making the structure sturdy and long-lasting.
