This week’s featured pets are Lucy the dog and a pair of kittens: Batman and Robin.

Lucy is a mature gal with a thick, white coat flecked with black, a sweet face, and a big smile. Her warm eyes greet everyone with a welcoming, happy expression while her helicopter tail goes round and round!

Lucy is young at heart, about seven years old, with energy to spare. Lucy is gentle and dainty in playgroups: she prefers to engage with other calm, quiet dogs rather than raucously romp. Lucy takes frequent breaks from the activity to pursue solo hobbies such as sniffing the grass and soliciting pets from the humans.

Lucy is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped – all she needs is a family to shower with love! Batman and Robin were found without a mother and were too young to be left alone. Because kittens have weak immune systems, they are susceptible to illness and premature death in a shelter setting. DBCHS had an available foster home and a lactating mama cat willing to care for Batman and Robin, giving them a second chance at life.

Living in a house keeps young animals healthy and provides opportunities for socialization while they get big enough to be spayed/neutered. Plus, we learn about their unique “purr-sonalities” from the people with whom they live.

Batman and Robin’s foster says: These guys are all kitten: curious, silly, and fun! They love exploring, playing with toys, tumbling around together, and snuggling. At six weeks old, they’re still weaning while enjoying wet food and use the litterbox faithfully. The boys will be neutered in the next few weeks and ready to go home.

A look back: The mid-2000s was a busy time for DBCHS. In 2005, the humane society expanded the cat room, providing more space to humanely house cats; and in 2007, it established Happy Paws to offer low-cost spay/neuter services to animals of low-income pet owners. Since then, the volunteer clinic has spayed/neutered more than 17,800 animals in the region.
