Flash was a shelter dog who needed a little extra support to become his best self and joined Mutts With Manners. Mutts With Manners live in the prison dormitory with carefully screened inmates and attend sessions led by our professional trainer, Cheri Carbone.

With Cheri’s guidance and assistance from a few volunteers, the inmates provide the dogs with the structure they need to adapt to a traditional home. In addition to receiving one-on-one companionship and lots of love, the dogs are socialized and learn good canine behaviors. Flash mastered his basic training long ago, so his handler introduced him to some service dog commands.

The list of tricks and tasks that Flash can execute is long and varied: he can sit pretty, give paw and high five, play peek-a-boo and roll over, and even balance treats on his nose! You can ask him to deliver you a can from your cooler or request that he bring you his leash, and he’s also learning how to turn on and off the lights. How cool is that?

Flash is much more than a well-trained dog; this handsome red tick’s sturdy body holds a huge heart, and his laid-back approach to life is endearing. He always wants to be close to his people and doesn’t ask for much in return. At an estimated four or five years old, Flash is mature yet has many years of love left to give.

We want Flash to go home as soon as possible for many reasons. Not only is he deserving of a family to call his own, but if Northpoint has to lock down, all of our Mutts With Manners dogs must leave the training center immediately.

Let’s get Flash into his furever home before there’s a need to bring him back to the shelter, which would be traumatic for him. If you’re not ready to adopt, we’re willing to consider a foster situation!

All of our Mutts With Manners dogs are fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and crate trained, too. If you are interested in adopting Flash or another Mutt, please complete an application here: https://bit.ly/3wNMhkj. A volunteer will contact you to schedule a meet-and-greet if you seem to be a good fit.

A look back: Mutts With Manners is in its 13th year, and countless dogs like Flash have completed the program since DBCHS established it in 2009. More historical highlights are coming your way as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of DBCHS. Mark your calendar for October 22 and celebrate with us at the 9th Annual Pints for Pets!
