This week’s pets are six darling kittens who are currently thriving in a foster home. Say hello to the nutty crew: Almond, Cashew, Macadamia, Pecan, Pistachio, and Walnut!

These six kitties are from the same litter and are just now weaning from their gorgeous mama Hazelnut, who is also available for adoption. It will be a few weeks before these little babies are big enough to be spayed or neutered, but you can adopt them now and pick them up when they’re ready to go home!

Shelter kittens don’t fare well; they have weak immune systems and are very susceptible to illness. Until they are big enough to be spayed/neutered, foster homes keep them safe and healthy, socialize them, and give us clues about their ‘purrsonality’.

For example, here’s what we’ve learned about this batch of cuties, straight from their human foster mama: Almond, Macadamia, and Pistachio are the more laid back of the litter, often found snuggling together in a cubby on the cat tower. You can usually spot Pecan and Walnut somewhere in the vicinity of toys. Cashew is the most social of the bunch, running to greet the human with cute squeals. All of them are 100% kitten – they love to tumble around, climb the cat trees, and playfully pounce on one another before collapsing in a fluffy pile to nap.

It is easier for a pet to be adopted if it lives in a home environment, where it is happier and less stressed. Foster pets are often adopted by family or friends of the foster pet, which is great fun for everyone! DBCHS actively seeks fosters to have on hand when needy animals require home care. A look back: In 2012 DBCHS kicked off a capital campaign called “For the Love of Dogs” to raise money for a state-of-the-art space for dogs and puppies. The board and countless volunteers worked to make a dream come true. The spacious new Katherine E. Nelsen Adoption Center was complete by September 2016, right before Kathy sadly passed away from a terminal illness.
