During the Monday night Boyle County School Board meeting superintendent Mike LaFavers announced he will retire after the current school year. LaFavers has been superintendent of Boyle County Schools for the past 14 years.

“I’ve loved my time working for this school district, as a teacher, coach, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent,” LaFavers said. “I’ve been honored to work with dedicated board members and distract staff as we have pursued excellence for our students. Through our collaboration we have enjoyed great success, and I’m confident the next chapter will be even greater.”

Many members of the board expressed their respect for LaFavers and that they are sad that his time working for the school district is coming to end.

“None of us wanted to accept this resignation,” said board chair Jennifer Newby. “You never settled for good, you never settled for great, you strove for excellence.”

In other news from the meeting, the school board voted to lower the property tax rate from 66 cents to 64.8 cents per $100 dollars of assessed property value. Even with the lower rate, the school board expects to see a 4 percent increase in revue due to increasing property values in the county.

The school board also approved the 30-year payment in lieu of taxes or “PILOT” agreement with Team Leader LLC., a company with plans to  develop the property next to Lowe’s on the South Danville Bypass. Under this agreement, the contractor will make yearly payments for the full tax value of the undeveloped property, but will only have to pay 50 percent on the increase in value after development. The benefit of this agreement is that the school system will have an increase in revenue, but will not have to add additional services as the property will be developed for commercial use.
