The city of Danville was awarded funds from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to be used for park upgrades, City Engineer Josh Morgan announced at the city commission meeting on Monday.

The grant is for $125,000 and will be matched by the city for $125,000, a total of $250,000 for the project. The commission approved a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Local Government for the funding.

The money will go toward new playgrounds at Jackson Park and Cowan Street Park, and ballfield improvements at Jackson Park.

Commissioner Denise Terry said there’s an additional need for seating and shade areas at Jackson Park. Morgan said they will have to look at the budget details for the project to see where shade and seating might fit in.

The commission appointed Commissioner Jennie Hollon to the new board of the Danville Boyle County Development Corporation (DBCDC). The DBCDC is the new version of the old EDP, and its new bylaws were passed in August.

The bylaws create a new board structure of nine members, with two seats for Danville. The Danville mayor gets one seat and a commissioner gets the other.

Commissioner Kevin Caudill made the nomination for Hollon, who had not been on the previous EDP board, to be the representative. The vote was unanimous.

“I’ve enjoyed working through the transition to get it to this point, but I think it’s important to let somebody with a fresh set of eyes to come in now and kind of take it and run with it,” Caudill said.

The DBCDC will have its first meeting with the new board in October.

In other business, the commission:

• Heard the introduction of the new community liaison, Melanie Crossfield.

• Awarded a bid for the lighting portion of the downtown Streetscape Project. The bid went to Sesco Lighting in the amount of $738,824. This amount will cover both the tall and pedestrian-level street lights, bollards, cafe style lighting, and other things within the larger streetscape design currently being constructed.

• Appointed Marvin Swann and Melinda Weathers to the MLK committee for one-year terms.

• Passed the second reading of ordinance 2000 changing the zoning at 0 East Main Street from RM2 (two-family residential) to RM3 (multi-family residential). This 10-acre plot at the end of East Main will be used for single-level senior housing units.

• Passed the second reading of ordinance 2001 changing the zoning for about three acres at 1695 Lancaster Road from agriculture to light industrial. This piece of land on Luca Mariano Distillery’s property will be used to build their distillery.
