This week’s featured pets are Fiesta and Hazelnut.

Fiesta is a three-year-old mixed-breed dog who loves to play! This high-energy, friendly girl will rock a squeaky toy like nobody’s business, repeatedly tossing it with joy.  You will be impressed with her incredible tennis ball-catching skills – you can count on her to get it every time!

Fiesta knows a couple of commands, too. Ask her to sit, and she’ll do it, especially if you reward her with a toy. Once she’s finished playing, Fiesta flops down for belly rubs and pets.

Fiesta has bounced from home to home over the last year through no fault of her own.

She’s as sweet as she is fun and ready for her next (and hopefully last) adventure.

Hazelnut is a gorgeous dilute calico tabby cat with big, bright eyes that take in everything around her. She appreciates it when you pet her soft coat and chirps while headbutting your hand for more. Hazelnut is a stunning cat: mostly white with light brown and gray splashes, accented with a few classic tabby markings.

This pretty kitty has mothered at least seven kittens and has lived with two foster families. Throughout the changes, Hazelnut has been a nurturing mother to all her kits. She’s still nursing a couple of the smaller babies, but she can be adopted now and move into her new home once she’s finished caring for her kittens.

A look back: In 2018, national welfare organizations targeted Kentucky for its outdated shelter practices and funneled grant money and support to the state. DBCHS had the opportunity to work with an animal welfare consultant, Dr. Pizano, with Shelter USA, thanks to funding from the Bluegrass Area Development District.

Dr. Pizano toured our facility, reviewed county ordinances, and shelter policies, and provided a road map to maximize our resources and improve our live outcomes. Dr. Pizano has since introduced us to countless resources, regularly shares up-to-date research, and helps DBCHS secure Community Cat Program funding.
