EMH welcomes 2 physicians to its staff

Ephraim McDowell Health welcomes two doctors to the medical staff.

Maryam Zia, M.D., an endocrinologist, and infectious disease physician Maher Alchreiki, M.D., will begin their new positions on Nov. 7. Both will practice inside the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute.

Dr. Zia is board-certified in internal medicine and board-eligible in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. She went to medical school in Pakistan. She completed her internal medicine residency training at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Mercy in 2020 and then stayed at University of Pittsburgh for her fellowship in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism.

In the field of endocrinology, her main areas of interest include diabetes, thyroid, osteoporosis, obesity, high blood pressure and disorders of the pituitary and adrenal glands.

Dr. Zia lives in Nicholasville with her husband, Ahmed, and their child.  In her free time, she enjoys travelling, reading and playing board games.

Dr. Alchreiki earned his medical degree in 2004 from Tishreen University Medical School in Lattakia, Syria. In 2011 he completed an internal medicine residency at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York. He completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta in 2019. Dr. Alchreiki treats a variety of conditions including HIV infection, acute and chronic viral hepatitis, including hepatitis A, B or C, tuberculosis, histoplasmosis and other fungal infections, C diff and other GI diseases, bloodstream and catheter/port infections, tick or mosquito-borne infections, pneumonia, MRSA and other skin infections.

Dr. Alchreiki lives in Danville with his wife, Sally, and their two children: 4-year-old Anna and 3-year-old Emma. In his free time, he enjoys reading, spending time with family at the zoo, park, and library and traveling.
